Company History
Byrne Mech Engineering was established by Mr Patrick Byrne in July of 1977, and began manufacturing in a rented warehouse, close to it's current location. Initially the company had four employees and generated a turnover of IRP 400,000 in it's first year as a subcontractor to the automotive industry. Key customers included Bombardier and Dennison trucks.
In 1980 the company moved to a purpose built 10,000 sq. ft. factory at it's current location in the Raheen Industrial Estate in Athenry, and added a further 20,000 sq. ft. in 1989. The addition of major automotive customers such as Thermo King and Terex equipment during the 80's brought the turnover above IRP 1m by 1989.
In the late 1980's Byrne Mech realised that the growth in the manufacture computer business in Ireland presented it with an
opportunity to develop it's business beyond the automotive sector. It's
first major move into the sheet metal fabrication business came when it
was awarded a major supply contract with Amdahl . This contract allowed
Byrne Mech to develop it's production and quality systems leading to
it's ISO 9000 certification in 1988 . The company was the first sheet
metal manufacturer in Ireland to earn it's ISO 9000 accreditation . In
1989 the company was awarded the supplier of the year award by the
Irish Trade Board.

In the early 1990's Byrne Mech has developed its sheet metal
fabrication business which can be now split between computer chassis
manufacture, automative panels, and the manufacture of enclosures
for both the computer , telecommunications and power distribution
industries. Byrne Mech have implemented a number of development
plans for the company over the years. These plans focused on the
application of World Class Manufacturing methods within the company.
Key factors within the strategy included:
- Rationalization of activities to core competencies i.e. punching , bending , welding , stud insertion and painting.
- Focus on small number of key customers.
- Development of cell based manufacture
- Capital Investment Programs
- Management Development
- European Manufacturing and Distribution services
The successful implementation of that business plan has now left Byrne Mech
with a blue chip customer list and in a position where the foundations
are in place to implement it's next phase of development.
That phase of development began with the introduction of robotic
capabilities in our Punching/Bending/Welding areas.
We have entered the Aerospace industry as a supplier backed up
with this new technology and our dedicated experienced team.
The future looks bright.
